A team of Year 2 students found information gained from an interview with Sydney Jockey Robyn Freeman-Keys very useful. Interviews provide current information and human perspectives on topics. The recorded interview using “screen record” enabled the team to view it later, assisting planning for both their story and scene design. As part of the cultural celebration unit, the student team had choice in their team members, study topic and film genre.

Year 2 team interview a national historian as a key research tool in crafting their Battle of the Artz documentary

A team of Year 2 students found information gained from an interview with Australian War Memorial historian Meleah Hampton very useful. Interviews provide current information and human perspectives on topics. The recorded interview using “screen record” enabled the team to view it later, assisting planning for both their story and scene design. As part of the cultural celebration unit, the student team had choice in their team members, study topic and film genre. 

Yr 2 Students use iMovie and Garage Band on iPads to produce and edit 8 movies

As part of the Battle of the Artz competition, students edited first draft products after one tutorial. While many had used the software on their own devices, they produced first drafts easily. Students also used google drive to import voice overs produced earlier and could record these directly into iMovie as well. 5 port headphone jacks enabled all students to engage with the activity. Key points of this lesson were adapted from the Caspa boot camp in May where industry leaders and education leaders gave practical examples of the iPad’s use as an all in one media production tool.

Students take ownership of their films - lights, camera, action

As part of the Battle of the Artz film entries, students create their film using night time scenes and lighting to create visual effects. All films were made using an ipad, wireless lapel mic and tripod. Students and parents supported the night time set, with props, costumes and feeding the hungry. I was able to relax and encourage students to direct each other as there was a clear storyboard in place. Thanks to onsite mentoring from the CaSpa team and supportive parents, the night was a great success.

Motivated beyond the school gate

An enthusiastic group of year 2 students set up their Australia Day opening scene on the set of their battle of the artz entry. Weeks of writing, drawing and thinking in small chunks pays off. Even though it’s Saturday, good planning and great support from parents ensures a quick finish.

Filming outside in new environments encourages quick thinking, adaptation and problem solving from the team.

Student’s ideas come to life using Keying Adobe Premiere and Adobe After Effects

During the CaSpa Battle of the Artz films, some Year 2 students imagined some scenes in many varied places. Simple Green screen effects can help the students imagine their dreams, A balance of real life sets and chromakey can work effecively. This is a great exercise for Mathematics as well.
